Blue Light Acne Treatment

Medical Spa & Cosmetic Dermatology Serving Beverly Hills, Lancaster, Cerritos, Santa Ana & Nearby Southern California

If you suffer from mild to moderate acne with inflammation, you may well be a candidate for a light-based system called Blue Light. Your treatments are short, painless sessions of blue light exposure which help minimize your acne. Blue Light is a drug-free treatment with no downtime, no pain, no irritation, no problems with the sun or physical activities, and no side effects.

Most acne patients see a decrease in the number and severity of acne blemishes and lesions within a month of twice-weekly treatments. Optimum results will be seen between 4-8 weeks after treatment.* The light stimulates natural processes that continue after the treatment has stopped.

Acne begins when the sebaceous glands become clogged and there is a build-up of acne bacteria called P.acnes. This bacteria build-up causes inflammation. Certain light spectrums activate bacteria-fighting agents produced by your body called porphyrins.

Blue Light is a high-intensity blue-violet light that activates these porphyrins and starts a chemical reaction that produces peroxide. This naturally produced peroxide is what destroys the P. acnes bacteria (the root cause of inflamed blemishes).

Blue Light causes acne bacteria to "self-destruct" while having no effect on your normal skin. Blue Light Acne Therapy is suitable for all body areas, including the large areas of the back and shoulders and the sensitive beard area.

What Is a Blue Light Treatment like?

Following the cleansing of your skin, you will sit comfortably in front of the light for a period of minutes with protective goggles over your eyes. Blue Light is pain-free. There is no peeling, no irritation, no restriction from sun exposure and no after-effects from the treatment. Blue Light gently goes to work to reduce your acne. Immediately after a treatment you are free to resume your normal activities.

"By incorporating a non-aggressive therapy such as the Blue Light and specific recommended topical products, most moderate acne will calm down and respond to treatment. Maintenance sessions along with consistent proper product use can help keep your acne under control."

Omnilux revive and Omnilux blue have been cleared for the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris. The approval recognizes that this combination treatment protocol achieved reductions in lesion counts of more than 80% over a 12-week period, post treatment.

Will Blue Light Make All of My Acne Go Away?

Though the inflammation will be gone for the majority of patients at the end of the treatment series, you may experience a redness, where the inflamed blemish was located. This redness will dissipate over time, or Dr. Sedgh can use Starlux V™ Pulsed Light or IPL Photofacial to help resolve red discoloration left behind by a blemish

Treating Tougher Acne; What's the Next Step?

Blue Light is designed to treat only inflamed mild to moderate acne blemishes. Blue Light won't clear cystic and/or nodular acne or comedones. If you experience severe acne, Dr. Sedgh may recommend PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT), prescription oral and/or topical antibiotics or in particularly severe instances you may be prescribed a course of Accutane.

Acne is not a medically "curable" condition, but it is one that can be controlled and managed. You may require maintenance treatments to keep the clearing at an optimum level. This is in addition to any at-home treatment program you have been advised to use.

What Should I Do between Treatments?

You should avoid touching or picking your blemishes at all times. Dr. Sedgh will advise you of correct products and proper home care during and after your treatment.
